Kassia R.
Private tutor in Bremerton, WA
Education
I hold a BA in German Studies and Environmental Geoscience from Smith College, where I graduated Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa in 2011. I studied one year in Hamburg as a DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) scholar, and one year in Kiel as a Fulbright scholar. I spent both years researching landscape change in northern Germany.
Experience
Currently, I teach garden science to elementary schoolers in after school programs across Fayetteville. Although horticulture is the emphasis, my love of Geology sneaks in, and I take advantage of every opportunity to share my earth science knowledge with my students. I am interested in pursuing a degree in Environmental Education, and enjoy above all teaching in a one on one setting. Tutoring is an opportunity to share two subjects that appeal to me greatly while also employing the teaching skills I use on a daily basis. German: I was a German Studies major in college, lived in northern Germany for two years, and speak with great fluency. I currently attend a language Stammtisch in Fayetteville. It is very important to me that I keep my language skills current. During my time abroad I spent a large number of evenings at language cafes, trading my English for an acquaintance's German. In addition to allowing my partner and myself to improve our conversation skills and expand our colloquial and academic vocabularies, I developed a unique insight into my language acquisition and that of each partner. The grammar/vocabulary that stuck was the grammar/vocabulary that felt relevant. It is incredibly important that the desired language be presented and used in a way that feels relevant to the learner. During my year in Kiel, I used this teaching philosophy to tutor students in English. One high school graduate read English impeccably, and spoke with great fluency. She worried however, that her accent--almost unintelligible--would preclude entry at the local university. After working together for a semester, she was able to enter Kiel University in the English Department as a first year. Geology: In addition to German, I studied Environmental Geosciences in college. I completed coursework in Earth Science, Mineralogy, Geomorphology, Crystallography, Environmental Geophysics, Chemistry, Geo-chemistry, Paleontology, Structural Geology, Environmental Science, and Evolutionary and Conservation Biology. I spent summers conducting Environmental Science research at NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration), Notre Dame University, and the University of Hamburg. After graduating, I spent a summer as a laboratory and field technician at the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) conducting research relevant to the Clean Water Act. I have a thorough understanding of Earth processes and their environmental relevance.
